For lake owners
Pond aeration: how to choose and place an aerator
2 min read

Fish gathering at the surface before sunrise, a sudden odour or an algae-covered bay are not reasons to buy the largest compressor blindly. First identify where and when oxygen is being lost. Correct aeration moves water, supports gas exchange and gives a fishery owner time during heat, after storms and under ice.
What aeration actually does
Dissolved oxygen is often lowest just before dawn. Organisms keep respiring overnight while photosynthesis stops. Warm water holds less oxygen, while fish and organic matter consume more. Visible spray is not the key measure; the moved water volume is.
Which type to choose
A bottom diffuser drives vertical circulation. A surface aerator transfers oxygen rapidly at the air-water boundary. A fountain improves appearance and some exchange, but a decorative jet may not mix a deep pond.
How to size the system
Record surface area, average and maximum depth, approximate volume, fish species and load, sediment, available power and operating hours. Estimate volume from area times average depth, then check the manufacturer’s performance data. Airflow alone is not oxygen-transfer capacity.
Where to install it
One unit beside the easiest socket may leave a remote bay stagnant. Mark holes, warm shallows, weed beds and feeding areas. Keep the compressor dry and ventilated; route cables and hoses away from swims and boat lanes.
How to verify the result
Measure dissolved oxygen before dawn and during the day at repeatable locations and depths. Log temperature, weather, clarity, feeding and fish behaviour. Measure again after changing the schedule.
Summer and winter operation
Summer risk rises during heat, calm weather and algae die-off. In winter maintain gas exchange without needlessly destroying the warmer deep-water refuge; diffusers are often moved shallower. Fence and mark open water.
Operating checklist
Clean filters and inspect membranes, diffusers, hoses and anchors. Plan backup power or a portable emergency aerator for high fish loads. Reduce feeding during oxygen stress and investigate the cause.
How it fits with bookings
Aeration belongs to pond operations, not to booking software. Once the technical plan is set, Pegly can show anglers the swim map, current availability and rules. Update available swims whenever maintenance temporarily closes part of the bank.
